The TrueFlies Story

TrueFlies was not born in a boardroom, office or living room. TrueFlies was born on a boat. Looking back that seems a fitting place. Born on a hot May outing in 2003, on a charter skiff operated by Captain Cole Fairbanks out of Boca Grande, Florida.

Until that day, Captain Cole had never met his two clients. Mike Lintz, of Cincinnati, ran his own marketing and graphics design firm. Todd Davis, a long-time friend and fishing buddy, had over the years become an avid angler. Each kept their gear at the ready for any opportunity to get together and steal away to South Florida for some fly fishing.

So it began. The three men boarded the skiff and Captain Cole guided them to the shoals where the tarpon were cruising. Before long, it became clear that each loved the sense of freedom that came from being on the water. More particularly, it was their feelings of being connected to this environment, its unique setting of mangrove islands and salt marshes, its profuse variety of fish and wildlife, and the traditions of the old anglers. A place they could visit but never inhabit.

Their talk continued, from low jokes and laughter to tall tales and reminiscences going all the way back to their childhoods. They also ridiculed the kind of clothing they'd had to put up with and wondered why no one was designing the performance clothing that was suitable for salt water fishing. It was a subject that would come up again.

Captain Cole Fairbanks was practically born on the water. He can't remember when he didn't have a fly rod in his hand, fishing the southeast coast from Stuart through the Keys and around the Bahamas. As a descendent of R. A. Ponce of St. Augustine, he comes from one of Florida's oldest families. Knowledge of the back country, the drift of the tides and the ways of sea creatures seemed to be in his blood. His life had been spent around the veteran anglers and the guardians of Florida's rich history, the people who remembered the old stories and passed them on.

The history, the tales, the teeming life of the coastal regions, the pioneers of salt water fly-fishing, all struck an image of Old Florida that stuck in the heart of young Mike Lintz. As a boy, Mike travelled around the state with his father whose ventures included The Ocean Reef Club/ Angler's Club of Key Largo and The Boca Grande Club, some of the most beautiful developments in South Florida. Everywhere in those days, remnants of Florida's distinguished past could still be found around the bays and islands. For Mike these markings of a bygone time came to symbolize a way of life that he wanted to preserve.

Todd had never experienced the Florida in this era, but his love of the outdoors forged in him a passion for fishing and the environment. Through years of fly fishing with Mike, Todd learned to understand the enthusiasm that brought them back to the area around Charlotte Harbor and to enjoy not only the thrill of angling but also the tradition that was a part of the place.

As the days wore on, the routine aboard the skiff that began with their customary jokes and laughter and a few cold drinks, drifted into extended conversations of discovery. Each spoke of the ways of Old Florida and their love of life on the water, of close calls and candid failures. Like the great revelations that came from fishing-no not just fishing, not the mere act, but the mystery of you and the fish when you knew there actually was a connection between you.

Having discovered their commonality-their love of the water, the life and the environs of Old Florida-they knew they had to find some way to sustain and improve the experience of those who participated in this tropical treasure. It was Cole who looked up and said, Hey, we've been whining about the gear we have to wear. Why not do something to change that. There could be colors that suited the tropical environs, cuts that move the way fly fishermen have to move, fabrics and features that function as you need them to, designs that leave you looking good when it's time to leave the dock.

By the time they hauled in their lines on the last day of their trip and Captain Cole turned the boat back toward the marina, TrueFlies was a newborn reality. Since then, it has found its legs. As it turns out, a fishing guide and a designer make a pretty good team.

TrueFlies holds to the highest standards of materials and features. Modern fabrics and performance-based components that come in a classic sporting style. Our laboratory is on a boat. The cut, the functionality and the durability of our products are tested on a daily basis by Capt. Cole and his selected group of guides on the many grass flats, creeks and back-country bays of Boca Grande, Florida. Our clothing must meet the test of daily use or it will never be called TrueFlies.

We strive to honor the rich heritage that is Florida angling. And beyond that, we also strive to keep Old Florida's very culture from sliding into obscurity. Images of this culture are incorporated into our clothing. They will tickle the fancy of those not familiar with them and put a reminiscent smile on the face of those who do.

This is not a business but a passion. We have recently sponsored Mote Marine's Project Snook which is helping these magnificent fish to recover from two winters of cold shock. We are proud to be a part of this effort and proud to follow the generations of anglers who participated in the traditions of this magic place.

TrueFlies Clothing is proud to announce their support for the Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative,
a program operated by Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (B.T.T.)

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is a group of concerned anglers and guides who want to preserve their way of life. Scientists working to answer questions about these popular and elusive game fish.  It was formed in 1998 by a group of anglers, guides, and scientists in the Florida Keys who wanted to learn more about bonefish and tarpon in order to enhance their dwindling populations. Since then it has grown to include concerned anglers from over 20 countries, researchers from throughout the world, and guides committed to working with B.T.T. in order to educate anglers and gather data while on the water.

The Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative, as the name implies, is dealing with protecting the fragile mangrove habitat that is essential for juvenile Tarpon, and Snook. Since healthy fisheries depend on a strong juvenile population, there is special urgency with regard to maintaining these “Cradles Of Life”. Although Charlotte Harbor has retained much of its mangrove shoreline, there have been significant losses of mangrove wetlands. Perhaps more problematic has been the alteration of freshwater flows into these mangrove wetlands, which negatively impact juvenile Tarpon, Snook, and the fish they feed upon. Fortunately, much of the habitat degradation that has occurred can be corrected, and planning can still occur to prevent further habitat loss.

Dr. Aaron J. Adams, Ph.D., Director Of Operations for B.T.T., on why the Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative is so important – "Juvenile Tarpon and Snook depend upon shallow, backwater habitats for at least the first five years of their lives. Common characteristics include:

  • Mangrove or other fringing vegetation that provides structure and protection from bird predators;
  • A mixture of depths — primarily shallow with some deeper pools for fish to congregate when water levels decrease;
  • Tidal exchange through narrow, shallow passages that keep predatory fish away;
  • Freshwater inflow;
  • Calm backwaters.

Restoration of juvenile Tarpon and Snook habitats will help ensure healthy fisheries for Charlotte Harbor, and the significant contributions of TrueFlies to this effort are essential to this effort. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is grateful for the donation of TrueFlies to juvenile tarpon habitat restoration, and to the future of the fishery."

Captain Cole Fairbanks, VP TrueFlies L.L.C., on the decision to support B.T.T. — "Mike (Lintz, Pres. TrueFlies L.L.C.) and I feel very strongly that we are obliged to do what we can to help protect the Tarpon, as well as their estuarine home. We owe them that not only as anglers, and charter captain, who have spent countless hours enjoying the pursuit of these magnificent fish, but also as those whose industry is dependent on anglers being able to go into these beautiful wild spaces, and interact with these animals forever!"

Captain Cole Fairbanks

City: Boca Grande
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 258-1683
Email: cole@trueflies.com

Captain Cole Fairbanks is a native Floridian who grew up fly fishing the southeastern coast of Florida from Stuart to Key West, and extensively through the Bahamas.

Thirty-one years of salt water fly fishing has given Cole a unique understanding of and an appreciation for the flats, the surrounding backcountry and all of its denizens.

The desire to stay close to the sport he loved prompted him to start a custom fly tying business at age 15. Developing new fly patterns (and the tactics that make each one work) is still a passion for Cole today. Cole puts this passion to good use as he guides his clients to some of the very best sight fishing for Tarpon, Snook and Redfish on the waters surrounding Boca Grande, Florida.

Starting a conversation with Cole on the subject of feeding flies to game fish is not recommended for those in a hurry! When I asked him to sum up what it is that makes salt water fly fishing so special, I was hit with enough material to fill a book!

The following is the 'cliff notes' version of what poured out of him; you can always hear the rest from him out on the boat sometime!

Captain Anton Barrington

City: Boca Grande
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 964-2445
Email: info@bocagrandeoutfitters.com

Guiding clients is a family tradition for Capt. Anton Barrington.

Anton was born on a farm in Southern Africa. His father George Barrington was a Big Game Guide for the famed outfitter Kerr & Downey.

Anton moved with his family to Englewood, Florida when he was 10. He immediately found the backcountry waters of Charlotte Harbor to be a suitable replacement for the African Plane. After all, a giant Tarpon on a fly rod has to be the piscatorial equivalent to taking down a Rhino!

Anton has been guiding Fly anglers in Boca Grande, Florida for over a decade. Giant Tarpon on flies are his specialty, and he is with no doubt, one of the best there is!

Anton possesses an analytical nature, a fertile mind bent on technical innovation, and Bulldog like tenacity. These traits not only serve him well as a guide, but also a designer of marine products, designed to make time spent fly fishing more efficient, and enjoyable. Three years ago Anton took several of his finished designs, and started his company, ABB Innovations. Everything from Re-Designed Trolling Motor heads, to custom casting platforms are available. To say these products are upgrades would be an understatement! They get tested, re-designed, and tested again, until they are perfect. Tested by the toughest critic of all – Anton himself.

Captain Austin Lowder

City: Placida
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 815-0254
Email: info@seaandstream.com

Captain Austin Lowder is an angler's dream and a giant Snook's worst nightmare.

He has been guiding clients in both Florida and Montana for over 18 years.

Austin is on a short list of Florida guides who have graduated with a degree in Fisheries Management and Wildlife Biology (from Montana State University).

In 1998, he moved to Boca Grande, Florida to guide his clients to all that the Charlotte Harbor watershed has to offer, and in his words; "offer these guys an unparalleled sight fishing experience!" After 18 years as an active outfitter, Austin still spends late summer in southwest Montana where he guides float and wade fishing trips on the fabled Madison, Gallatin, Jefferson, Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers as well as the countless freestone and spring creeks that feed these drainages.

Austin is the Steve Irwin of fly fishing. He attacks each day with an enthusiasm and intensity that would make you think he is diesel powered! He also possesses an uncanny ability to "feed" fish; he seems at times to be half angler, half psychoanalyst! I mean, he can get in their heads and make them eat! Seeing is believing! When you combine this kind of dedication with his education and intimate knowledge of the backcountry, the result is a day you won't forget!
