The TrueFlies Story

TrueFlies was born not in a boardroom, office, mailroom, or even a living room. TrueFlies was born on a boat. A charter skiff operated by Captain Cole Fairbanks to be exact. Ironically, Captain Cole was not the first choice of Mike Lintz, a graphic designer. Sometimes that which you did not plan, can yield unseen rewards.

Mike grew up in Cincinnati, but spent much of his youth in Boca Grande, FL where he developed his love for the saltwater and fishing. Captain Cole and Mike met that fateful day, went fishing, and even unknown to them at that time, TrueFlies' brand was born. They found they shared in common a deeper, more spiritual connection with the water. They not only enjoyed the fishing, but the act of fishing, being absorbed by the wild places, reduced from being an invader to this world, to being just another form of life found in it. Conversation on the boat would often find it's way to the rich history of old Florida and the pioneers of saltwater fly fishing. Conversation was not limited to just history lessons on the skiff. Mike and "The Good Captain" talked tackle, dirty jokes, and questionable movies (b-bb-bbuy B-BB-BBushWood?).

Another topic on the skiff was outdoor clothing. "Why does this have to fit like a circus tent? Why do we have to have a choice of khaki or khaki? What the hell does this loop thing do?" And of course, "Why can't I wear something fishing that my wife won't harass me about wearing!" Natural progression lead them to the realization of using their talents to put together a performance clothing line that would look good and be comfortable on or off the water. The line would feature colors reflecting a warm climate and the saltwater culture, cuts that allow range of movement but fit right, and genuinely functional features and materials. It would be a truly minimalistic approach to performance design with many of the features built into the fabrics on the yarn level. The driving ideal behind it all, "JUST BECAUSE IT'S FUNCTIONAL DOESN'T MEAN IT CAN'T LOOK GOOD!"

Mike and Cole sought out the services of Michael Blue, a native Floridian from West Palm Beach, on a recommendation. Blue's vast knowledge of clothing, fabric, fit, and design landed him positions at major retail brands such as Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, and Tommy Hilfiger and makes him a natural fit into TrueFlies' brand. Blue had already left the world of corporate fashion behind in 2002, changing his focus to combining his passion for fly fishing with his "Madison Avenue" design sensibilities. He has since designed clothing, waders, and hard goods for Redington, Albright, Powell, Landing Creek, Loomis Outdoors, and now TrueFlies.

Since it's inception, TrueFlies has committed itself to staying "True" to its core ideal. TrueFlies' passion is driven by its owners Mike, Cole, and Blue who all grew up on the water in South Florida. Their appreciation and understanding of the sand, sea, flora, fauna, and wildlife give the brand focus. In addition, the extensive hours logged guiding clients on the waters surrounding Boca Grande, Florida serves as the proving grounds for all TrueFlies' designs. The cut, durability, and functionality of our products is tested on a daily basis by Capt. Cole, as well as several other carefully selected guides throughout the Southeastern and Gulf states. Nothing that doesn't pass with flying colors will ever be called TrueFlies!

TrueFlies also honors the rich heritage that is Florida angling and serves as a steward of the Charlotte Harbor estuary. Beyond that, it strives to keep "Old Florida's" very culture from fading into obscurity, with imagery that will tickle the fancy of those that don't know, and put a reminiscent smile on the face of those who do.

TrueFlies Clothing is proud to announce their support for the Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative,
a program operated by Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (B.T.T.)

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is a group of concerned anglers and guides who want to preserve their way of life. Scientists working to answer questions about these popular and elusive game fish.  It was formed in 1998 by a group of anglers, guides, and scientists in the Florida Keys who wanted to learn more about bonefish and tarpon in order to enhance their dwindling populations. Since then it has grown to include concerned anglers from over 20 countries, researchers from throughout the world, and guides committed to working with B.T.T. in order to educate anglers and gather data while on the water.

The Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative, as the name implies, is dealing with protecting the fragile mangrove habitat that is essential for juvenile Tarpon, and Snook. Since healthy fisheries depend on a strong juvenile population, there is special urgency with regard to maintaining these “Cradles Of Life”. Although Charlotte Harbor has retained much of its mangrove shoreline, there have been significant losses of mangrove wetlands. Perhaps more problematic has been the alteration of freshwater flows into these mangrove wetlands, which negatively impact juvenile Tarpon, Snook, and the fish they feed upon. Fortunately, much of the habitat degradation that has occurred can be corrected, and planning can still occur to prevent further habitat loss.

Dr. Aaron J. Adams, Ph.D., Director Of Operations for B.T.T., on why the Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative is so important – "Juvenile Tarpon and Snook depend upon shallow, backwater habitats for at least the first five years of their lives. Common characteristics include:

  • Mangrove or other fringing vegetation that provides structure and protection from bird predators;
  • A mixture of depths — primarily shallow with some deeper pools for fish to congregate when water levels decrease;
  • Tidal exchange through narrow, shallow passages that keep predatory fish away;
  • Freshwater inflow;
  • Calm backwaters.

Restoration of juvenile Tarpon and Snook habitats will help ensure healthy fisheries for Charlotte Harbor, and the significant contributions of TrueFlies to this effort are essential to this effort. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is grateful for the donation of TrueFlies to juvenile tarpon habitat restoration, and to the future of the fishery."

Captain Cole Fairbanks, VP TrueFlies L.L.C., on the decision to support B.T.T. — "Mike (Lintz, Pres. TrueFlies L.L.C.) and I feel very strongly that we are obliged to do what we can to help protect the Tarpon, as well as their estuarine home. We owe them that not only as anglers, and charter captain, who have spent countless hours enjoying the pursuit of these magnificent fish, but also as those whose industry is dependent on anglers being able to go into these beautiful wild spaces, and interact with these animals forever!"

Captain Cole Fairbanks

City: Boca Grande
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 258-1683
Email: cole@trueflies.com

Captain Cole Fairbanks is a native Floridian who grew up fly fishing the southeastern coast of Florida from Stuart to Key West, and extensively through the Bahamas.

Thirty-one years of salt water fly fishing has given Cole a unique understanding of and an appreciation for the flats, the surrounding backcountry and all of its denizens.

The desire to stay close to the sport he loved prompted him to start a custom fly tying business at age 15. Developing new fly patterns (and the tactics that make each one work) is still a passion for Cole today. Cole puts this passion to good use as he guides his clients to some of the very best sight fishing for tarpon, snook and redfish on the waters surrounding Boca Grande, Florida.

Starting a conversation with Cole on the subject of feeding flies to game fish is not recommended for those in a hurry. When I asked him to sum up what it is that makes salt water fly fishing so special, I was hit with enough material to fill a book.

Captain Anton Barrington

City: Boca Grande
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 964-2445
Email: info@bocagrandeoutfitters.com

Guiding clients is a family tradition for Capt. Anton Barrington.

Anton was born on a farm in Southern Africa. His father, George Barrington, was a big game guide for the famed outfitter Kerr & Downey.

Anton moved with his family to Englewood, Florida when he was 10. He immediately found the backcountry waters of Charlotte Harbor to be a suitable replacement for the African plain. After all, a giant tarpon on a fly rod has to be the piscatorial equivalent to taking down a rhino!

Anton has been guiding fly anglers in Boca Grande, Florida for over a decade. Giant tarpon on flies are his specialty, and he is with no doubt, one of the best there is!

Anton possesses an analytical nature, a fertile mind bent on technical innovation, and bulldog like tenacity. These traits not only serve him well as a guide, but also a designer of specialty marine products that make time spent fly fishing more efficient, and enjoyable. Three years ago Anton started the company ABB Innovations, and put several of his designs into full production. Everything from redesigned trolling motor heads to custom casting platforms are available. To say these products are upgrades would be an understatement. They get tested, redesigned, and tested again until they are perfect. Tested by the toughest critic of all – Anton himself.

Captain Austin Lowder

City: Placida
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 815-0254
Email: info@seaandstream.com

Captain Austin Lowder is an angler's dream and a giant Snook's worst nightmare.

He has been guiding clients in both Florida and Montana for over 18 years.

Austin is on a short list of Florida guides who have graduated with a degree in fisheries management and wildlife biology (from Montana State University).

In 1998, he moved to Boca Grande, Florida to guide his clients to all that the Charlotte Harbor watershed has to offer, and in his words: "offer these guys an unparalleled sight fishing experience!" After 18 years as an active outfitter, Austin still spends late summer in southwest Montana where he guides float and wade fishing trips on the fabled Madison, Gallatin, Jefferson, Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, as well as the countless freestone and spring creeks that feed these drainages.

Austin is the Steve Irwin of fly fishing. He attacks each day with an enthusiasm and intensity that would make you think he is diesel powered. He also possesses an uncanny ability to "feed" fish; he seems at times to be half angler, half psychoanalyst. I mean, he can get in their heads and make them eat! Seeing is believing. When you combine this kind of dedication with his education and intimate knowledge of the backcountry, the result is a day you won't forget.

Capt. Tim Klein

City: Islamorada
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (305)-852-1512

Captain Tim Klein is an artist who uses a push pole instead of a brush.

His canvases are the lush grass flats of the Florida Keys, Biscayne Bay, and the waters of the Everglades. His masterpieces are painted in the memories of his countless satisfied clients.

It is a rarity indeed to speak of an Islamorada guide, and not have to say in what town he was born and raised. Klein has lived in Islamorada his entire life, and spent that time on the fabled flats that make this place so famous. At this point, it's safe to say that no living angler possesses more knowledge of these waters.

Klein has the uncanny ability to be at the right place at the right time. This is no accident, of course. Tim believes strongly in staying on the pole in order to cover water and find fish. His understanding of tide cycles, willingness to pole all day, and unmatched knowledge of the middle Keys makes Tim one the most successful of all saltwater fly fishing captains.

Recently, Tim guided angler Julia Hilton to the women's twelve-pound tippet world record bonefish (12 lbs., 6 oz, HP 888/3).

Klein is also a regular instructor at the Florida Keys Outfitters fly fishing school.

The Holeman Brothers

City: Key West
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (305) 906-0301
Email: bryan@keywestangling.com, travis@keywestangling.com

Travis and Bryan "Bear" Holeman have long been top figures in the fishing industry, with successes in all arenas available to the truly addicted angler, from tournament fishing to guiding.

This angling duo operates Key West Charters, in … well … Key West, where they cover the gambit from bonefish, permit, and tarpon, to pelagics, and reef fishing. If it has fins, they have a boat, and the gear (not to mention the passion) for it.

Years of tournament experience have given them the ability to adapt to fishing anywhere. Louisiana Texas, Florida, Alabama … it just doesn't matter. They're going to be effective. They can go anywhere (and do). They'll figure out where the fish are … before some guys have found a boat ramp. That's a special breed; they put TrueFlies metal to the test abroad, as well as on their home waters in the Keys.

Capt. Philip O'Bannon

City: Boca Grande
State: Florida
Country: United States
Phone: (941) 964-0359
Email: pobannon@comcast.net

Capt. Philip O'Bannon takes the phrase "Life Off the Chart" to task. He has fished everywhere you ever wanted to, and probably more than a few places you've never heard of!

As a professional captain for 35 years, he has guided presidents, CEO's, and a long-standing clientele.

O'Bannon has fished for bonefish, and permit from Bahia de la Ascension to Bahia at Espíritu Santo, Mexico, to the flats of Belize. In Panama he has guided for tarpon, snook, and cuberra snapper in the rivers and Laguna de Chiriquí from the Costa Rican border to the Panama Canal.

When he's at home (Boca Grande, FL), O'Bannon guides his clients to some of the finest tarpon fishing to be found stateside. To date his clients have caught 2,236 on flies!

O'Bannon brings over three decades of experience to the TrueFlies Pro Staff table, and we are honored to have his input.

TrueFlies Announces Limited Edition Mote Marine Shirt

Jan 12, 2013

Boca Grande, Florida – January 12, 2013 – TrueFlies Clothing, a fishing apparel company based out of Boca Grande, Florida announces the limited edition “Mote Marine Laboratory Boca Grande Field Office” Bokeelia Woven Shirt.

TrueFlies has provided the newly dedicated Mote Marine Laboratory Boca Grande Field office with their popular “Bokeelia” Woven shirt, emblazoned with the new lab’s logo embroidered on the chest.

The shirts are available at the “Mote Marine Laboratory – Boca Grande” office, located at Railroad Plaza, 480 E. Railroad Ave., Boca Grande, Fl. All proceeds will go toward funding an extensive acoustic tagging project for tarpon, enlisting guides and fishermen to capture 50 adult tarpon yearly. Researchers will tag each fish, then record their movements with 100 receivers placed in various habitats
around the harbor.

This new office is about “Pure Conservation”. In the words of Mike Crosby, the lab's head of research is to provide “unvarnished, un-political, straight-talking science” from which an informed public can make intelligent decisions.

Capt. Philip O’Bannon, the lab’s Executive Director has an ambitious plan for the new office, with far more than Tarpon on his mind. Other studies revolve around Snook, and include: Acoustic tagging, Genetic tracking, as well as Otolith chemistry.
Other projects studying Red tide are also being planned.

Co-owners Michael Lintz, and Capt. Cole Fairbanks, of Boca Grande, Florida, formed TrueFlies Clothing. Conceived on the notion of function, folded into fashion, TrueFlies produces clothing with technical features, while incorporating classic
sporting style. The result is a garment made to help one manage the elements on a hot, sun-drenched flat somewhere in the tropics… and look damn good while doing so.

Capt. Cole Fairbanks says of the new lab: “We are so thankful to Capt. O’Bannon and Mote for putting this office in place in an attempt to preserve such a precious watershed. We feel compelled to assist – at whatever capacity we can, those who
seek to maintain the water, and all of its denizens that are so much a part of our, and so many others lives.”

Captain Cole Fairbanks, VP TrueFlies L.L.C., on the decision to support B.T.T. —

Mike (Lintz, Pres. TrueFlies L.L.C.) and I feel very strongly that we are obliged to do what we can to help protect the Tarpon, as well as their estuarine home. We owe them that not only as anglers, and charter captain, who have spent countless hours enjoying the pursuit of these magnificent fish, but also as those whose industry is dependent on anglers being able to go into these beautiful wild spaces, and interact with these animals forever!

Addition Of Holman Brothers To TrueFlies' Pro Staff

Jan 25, 2012

Boca Grande, Florida – January 25, 2012 – TrueFlies Clothing, a fishing apparel company based out of Boca Grande, Florida is proud to announce the addition of Travis and Bryan Holeman to the TrueFlies Promotional Staff.

Travis and Bryan “Bear” Holeman have long been top figures in the fishing industry with successes in all arenas available to the truly addicted angler, from tournament fishing to guiding. This fishing duo brings expertise encompassing all aspects of saltwater fishing and a knowledge base that fits well with our clothing line of style and comfort. Look for the Holemans to be showcasing TrueFlies on and off the water as they continually share their knowledge and help anglers achieve their dreams!

Travis Holeman says of the TrueFlies line, “After a long day fishing the last thing one wants to think about is appearance. The unique combination or style and functionality TrueFlies Clothing offers make the transition from the water to happy hour a breeze.  Comfort and Style that last the entire day! Thank you TrueFlies for an excellent product line!

Bryan “Bear” Holeman added, “Its not often that a person of my stature finds a clothing manufacturer that is both like minded and makes “Bear” sized clothing.

Co-owners Michael Lintz, and Capt. Cole Fairbanks, of Boca Grande, Florida, formed TrueFlies Clothing. Conceived on the notion of function, folded into fashion, TrueFlies produces clothing with technical features, while incorporating classic sporting style. The result is a garment made to help one manage the elements on a hot, sun-drenched flat somewhere in the tropics… and look damn good while doing so.

Cole on the Holemans, “I couldn’t be more excited about bringing these guys on board! Put them anywhere: Louisiana Texas, Florida, Alabama… It just doesn’t matter. They’re going to be effective! They can go anywhere and figure out where the fish are… before some guys have found a boat ramp. That’s a special breed, and I know they’ll put our stuff to the test abroad, as well as on their home waters in the Keys.

TrueFlies Announces New Clothing Line

July 27, 2011

Boca Grande, FL (July 22, 2011) — TrueFlies LLC proudly announces the debut of its new clothing line, which premieres this August and will be presented at International Fly Tackle Dealer in New Orleans on August 18th.

The company’s offerings come in two distinct but complementary lines—Performance and Sportswear. With the Performance line, the goal was to design technical clothes that deliver all the function and mobility fly-fishers demand, but that would not be out of place in a nice restaurant after a day on the water.

“We like to say that, from the deck of the boat to a bar downtown, when you’re wearing our Performance gear, you’re always in your element,” says Mike Lintz, President and co-founder of TrueFlies.

TrueFlies’ Sportswear, on the other hand, is for those who are passionate about style and comfort.

“The emphasis here is on looking and feeling fantastic, pure and simple,” says Cole Fairbanks, TrueFlies Charter Captain and co-founder. “Our Sportswear will appeal to not only anglers, but boaters, golfers, and anyone who appreciates great design, sophisticated style, and fine craftsmanship.”

The company and the clothes were born of Lintz’s and Fairbanks’ shared passion—and frustration. Having spent countless hours chasing Florida gamefish like tarpon, redfish, and snook around Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor, the two often lamented the lack of functional but versatile fishing clothes. One idyllic afternoon, they decided to stop complaining and do something about it. In 2004, they formed TrueFlies LLC with an eye to making the kinds of clothes they—and presumably fellow-anglers and other outdoor enthusiasts—want to wear.

TrueFlies Clothing is proud to announce their support for the Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Initiative

Nov 29, 2012

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is a group of concerned anglers and guides who want to preserve their way of life. Scientists working to answer questions about these popular and elusive game fish.

Tagging a juvenile tarponSweeping the water for tarpon

  • Mangrove or other fringing vegetation that provides structure and protection from bird predators;
  • A mixture of depths — primarily shallow with some deeper pools for fish to congregate when water levels decrease;
  • Tidal exchange through narrow, shallow passages that keep predatory fish away;
  • Freshwater inflow;
